Caleb Mir, searching for his own mother, leads him to send a message on a frequency formerly used by the people attacking the ship, resulting in their arrival. However, Mir is able to obtain the atomic resonance of the programmable matter being used by the attackers and runs a program in the primary deflector killing the programmable matter and saving the ship. Mir is sentenced to 100 hours of menial labor and 90 day restriction to Academy grounds for endangering the ship and everyone onboard and also for transmitting an unauthorized subspace message.
